Rokka Collection

This collection began the spring designer Mori traveled to New York, struck by a thought: the structures of the natural world are beyond anything human hands create. And yet the tender persistence of people who keep creating, knowing they can never surpass it, is itself beautiful.

How lovely. Yes, so lovely. What is that? A mass of human effort. The New York skyline spreading beyond the Brooklyn Bridge.

How lovely. Yes, so lovely. What is that? A whim of nature. Pure white down carried on a soft breeze.

I am on the Brooklyn Bridge now. Where everyone points their cameras glitters the New York skyline.

A single tuft of down drifts past before my eyes. With a sigh of wonder I lose myself in it and give chase.

What people make is good, yet in the end it can never rival the whims of nature.

Or can it? Perhaps there is a creativity only humans possess. Borrowing form from the earth, giving it meaning, layering interpretations. How lovely. Yes, so lovely. The tender effort of human beings. People who keep creating, knowing they can never rival nature. Beyond the bridge, the crystal of our effort shines.

A few days after that moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, I remembered the words of an old ski instructor from long ago: the beautiful things of the earth are made of hexagons.

From there, we set out to borrow the shape of the hexagon from nature, and began creating in earnest. And so the Rokka, six flowers, Collection was born.
